違法並且經常逃避社會規則的人，通常指罪犯或土匪。歷史上，「亡命之徒」被認為不受法律保護。

“Outlaws” 多用於歷史或西部背景，指不受法律保護的罪犯。常用語還有 “band of outlaws”（一羣亡命之徒）。不用於普通違法者，意指完全被社會拒絕的人。
