يدل على شيء مختلف تمامًا عن شيء آخر، أو موجود على الجهة الأخرى في مواجهته. ويمكن أن يُستعمل كصفة أو اسم أو حرف جر حسب الجملة.

من أكثر التراكيب شيوعًا 'the opposite of' و 'opposite sides' و 'sit opposite me'. لا تخلطه مع 'different'، لأن 'opposite' يدل غالبًا على تضاد مباشر لا مجرد اختلاف.
