美術館や博物館は、歴史的、美術的、科学的、文化的な価値のあるものを保管し、一般に公開する場所です。学びや鑑賞のために訪れるところです。

日本語の「美術館」は主に美術作品を展示する施設、「博物館」は幅広い展示（歴史・科学など）を指します。「gallery」とは異なり、規模が大きく多様な展示があります。「art museum」「history museum」などの表現もよく使われます。
