罰したり害を加えることができる立場にありながら、思いやりやゆるしを示すこと。権力を持つ側が厳しくしないことを選ぶ場合によく使われます。

主に宗教的・法的・道徳的な場面で使われます。「show mercy」「have mercy on」「beg for mercy」「at the mercy of」などの表現でよく見られます。単なる親切ではなく、力や許しのニュアンスがあります。
