대학에서 주로 공부하는 학문 분야를 의미하며, 그 전공을 하는 학생 자체를 뜻하기도 한다.

미국식 영어에서 자주 쓰이며, 영국식에서는 'degree course'나 'subject'를 사용함. 'declare a major'는 전공을 정하는 것을 의미. 학문 관련해서 주로 사용됨.
