كلمة 'listen' تدل على الإصغاء المتعمد، بخلاف 'hear' التي قد تعني السماع من دون قصد. من التركيبات الشائعة: 'listen to music' و'listen to me' و'listen carefully'. وفي الماضي، تأتي 'listened' عادة مع 'to' قبل المفعول: 'She listened to the teacher'.
