色や重さ、雰囲気を軽くしたり明るくしたりすること。また、負担や痛みを和らげる意味もある。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「lighten your hair」「lighten the mood」のように色や雰囲気、気持ちを明るくしたり軽くしたりするときに使う。'lighten the load'は負担を減らす意味。'enlighten'とは異なるので注意。
