緯度とは、赤道から北または南への距離を度で表したものです。また、ある範囲内で自由に行動できる権限や余地を指すこともあります。

地理や科学でよく使われます。比喩的に「latitude」を使うときは「自由度」「裁量権」などの意味になります。「longitude（経度）」と混同しないようにしましょう。比喩的用法はややフォーマルです。
