直接には言わずに、秘密や冗談などを知っていることが表情や言葉に表れる様子を指します。経験や知識がある人にも使います。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「a knowing smile」「a knowing look」のような形で名詞の前によく使います。日常会話より書き言葉や丁寧な場面で使われます。単に「知っている」という動詞とは違います。
