調査員は、事件や事故、問題について事実を集め、証拠を調べて真実を明らかにする仕事をする人です。

警察、法律、保険、職場などでよく使われます。'Detective'は警察専門ですが、'調査員'はより広い意味。'私立調査員'、'主任調査員'、'調査チーム'などの表現でよく使われます。
