体の中にあり、胃から出た食べ物を消化して栄養と不要物を分ける長い管状の器官です。小腸と大腸があります。

医学や健康の話題で使われることが多い言葉です。全体を指す時は複数形（腸）を使い、「小腸」「大腸」ともよく使われます。「腸の感染」「腸の痛み」などとも組み合わせます。
