何かが瞬間的に起こるとき、それはすぐに、待たずに起こること。名詞では、ごく短い時間や一瞬のこと。

名詞の前で使われることが多い：'instant reply'（即答）、'instant noodles'（インスタントラーメン）、'instant coffee'（インスタントコーヒー）など。名詞の 'instant' は「一瞬」という意味で、'for an instant'、'the instant I saw it' のように使う。'immediate' とは使い方が異なるので注意。
