物や場所の内側にあるものや、心・精神など個人の内面を指すこともあります。

名詞の前につけて使うことが多い（例：“inner circle”、“inner voice”、“inner ear”）。物理的な場所なら“inside”も使うが、“inner”はやや抽象的・説明的。反対語は“outer”。
