因犯下罪行并被法院判刑而住在监狱里的人。有时“inmate”也可以指住在医院或疗养院的人，但通常指囚犯。

常用于指监狱里的犯人，正式场合如新闻或法律文件中很常见。早期英语中可指医院或养老院的住户，但现在大多指囚犯。不要与“mate”（朋友、同伴）混淆。
