例や絵、図を使って物事をわかりやすく説明すること。または本や記事のためにイラストを描くこと。

学術・公式・創作分野でよく使われます。「illustrate a point」は例を挙げて説明すること。「説明」と「イラストを描く」両方の意味があり、「demonstrate」（やって見せる）とは異なります。
