何もせずに動かない様子や、目的なくぼんやりしている様子。または、気にせずにいい加減に何かをすること。

主に文章で使われ、「座る」「立つ」「見る」などの動詞とよく組み合わされます。無活動や無目的さ、時に怠けたニュアンスがあります。日常会話では少なめです。

He sat idly on the bench, watching the birds.
