過去に何か良いことが起こることを望んだ、またはそうなればいいと信じていた状態。

「I hoped that...」「We hoped to...」の形で使うことが多いです。「expected」より控えめで丁寧。また、過去から未来を願った時に使われます。

I hoped for sunny weather yesterday.
