Definition

何かの到来や始まりを知らせる人や物。また、昔は王の到着などを公式に知らせる使者のことも指します。

動詞としてはフォーマルな場面やニュース、文学作品で使われることが多い。'herald a new era'（新時代の到来を告げる）、新聞名などにも現れる。また、兆しや前触れとして名詞で使われる場合もある。人名の『ハロルド』とは無関係。
