もともと南アジア起源でヨーロッパなどに住むロマ民族を指す言葉ですが、現代英語では差別的とされることが多く、「ロマ」または「ロマニ」が推奨されます。

「ジプシー」は失礼とされる場合が多いので、「ロマ人」などを使った方がよいです。また「to gyp」も避けてください。歴史的資料や古い表現に現れることがあります。
