Definition

人や動物が努力したり痛みや不満を表すとき、または言葉を使わずに返事をするときに発する短く低い音のことです。

'grunts of pain'（痛みによるうなり声）のように、力んだり痛みや不満を表す時によく使われます。動物にも人間にも使えます。「grunt（低い地位の兵士）」の意味とは区別してください。

I heard grunts from the next room.
