驚きや恐怖、息切れで、急に大きく息を吸い込むこと。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

文字通りの呼吸動作や、驚き・恐怖などの感情表現で使います。「gasp for air」は息を切らす場合、「in surprise」は驚きの場合。同じ発音の「溜息（sigh）」とは区別。
