親しくしていて、お互いに信頼や好意を持つ人たち。

'友達'はふつう複数で使われます。一人の場合は'友達'（単数）で使えますが、仲の良さによって使い分けることも。'知り合い'（acquaintance）とは異なる意味です。

I met two new friends at school today.

今日、学校で新しい**友達**が二人できました。
