기업, 조직, 운동 등을 직접 만들거나 처음 시작한 사람들이다. 처음 아이디어를 내고 시작한 이들을 말한다.

주로 조직이나 회사를 처음 만든 사람에게 사용되며, ‘회사 창립자’처럼 쓴다. 돈을 지원하는 funders(자금 제공자)와 혼동하지 말 것. 공식, 비즈니스 상황에서 많이 쓴다.
