Definition

形式とは、主に規則や伝統に従うために行われることで、実際にはあまり重要でない場合もあります。社会的なルールに基づいた言葉遣いや服装、振る舞いの丁寧さや堅さも指します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

'Formality'は、手続きや儀式などの公式な場面や、言葉遣い、服装、ふるまいの丁寧さを表します。'just a formality'は「ただの形だけ」という意味で使います。カジュアルな状況ではあまり使いません。

Signing the contract is a formality, but it is still required.
