昔、家族や国にいて伝統を築いたり、何か大切なことを始めた人たちのことです。

主にフォーマルや歴史的な場面で使われます。「我々の」や国名と一緒に使うことが多いです。家系の祖先だけでなく、国や組織の創設者にも使われます。書き言葉でよく見かけます。
