愚かな行いや考えを指し、特に判断力の欠如を表す言葉です。また、過去に建てられた装飾目的の奇妙な建物を指すこともあります。

文語的・フォーマルな表現で、たいてい複数形で使います。'the follies of youth'は「若気の至り」のように訳されます。
