物を曲げて重ねる動作、または簡単に収納や持ち運びできるように折りたためるもの（例：折りたたみ椅子）を指します。

形容詞として使うときは必ず名詞の前に置きます（折りたたみ椅子など）。料理ではやさしく混ぜる動作。ポーカーでは降りること。
