무언가를 하거나 움직일 때 혼란스럽거나 서툴게 힘들어하는 것. 어떤 일에서 제대로 해내지 못할 때도 쓴다.

비공식적·중립적으로 사용되며, 혼란이나 비효율적일 때 씀. 'flounder in water', 'flounder with a task' 같은 예에 자주 등장. 'founder'(완전히 실패하다 또는 설립자)와 혼동하지 말 것. 같은 철자의 물고기도 있음.
