보통 비가 많이 오거나 강이 넘쳐서 땅 위를 넓게 덮는 많은 양의 물을 말합니다. 무언가가 아주 많이 몰려들 때도 비유적으로 사용됩니다.

실제 자연재해 상황에서는 '홍수', 비유적으로는 '밀려드는 것' 을 씁니다. 뉴스나 공식 문서에서 자주 보입니다. 'floods of emotion'처럼 감정이 넘칠 때에도 사용됩니다.
