大量の水が通常は乾いている土地を覆う現象で、主に大雨や川の氾濫などが原因です。圧倒的に多い量を比喩的に表す場合もあります。

複数形の「洪水」は複数の出来事や一般的な状況を指します。比喩的に使う場合（例：floods of emotion）は「殺到」を使います。ニュースや公式な報告でよく使われます。
