炎は火が燃えているときに見える明るくて熱い部分のことです。何かが強く燃えている際に使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

通常は複数形で使われます（例: 'the flames spread quickly'）。よく使うフレーズに 'burst into flames', 'go up in flames', 'open flames' があります。'fire' よりも 'flames' は火の目に見える部分を指します。
