何かに成功できなかったこと、または目標を達成できなかったこと。また、思った通りに動かない人や計画、機械も指す。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

通常は『失敗』は成功できなかったことに使う：'business failure'（経営失敗）、'test failure'（試験の失敗）、'failure to respond'など。技術や医療分野では『engine failure』（エンジン故障）、『heart failure』（心不全）にも使う。人に対して『a failure』と言うと強い侮辱になるので注意。
