'Put out' से अधिक औपचारिक। अक्सर आग ('extinguish a fire'), रोशनी ('extinguish the lights'), या भावना/आशा ('extinguish hope') के लिए इस्तेमाल होता है। आम बोलचाल में भावनाओं के लिए कम उपयोग। 'Extinguisher' का अर्थ है 'अग्निशामक'।
