自分の失敗や間違いを正当化するための理由や説明。また、礼儀正しく許しを求めたり退席を申し出る時にも使う。

『言い訳』は言い逃れや正当化する意味が強い。『許す』は誰かを許可したり許すこと。『excuse me』は「すみません」となるので、使い方に注意。

Please excuse me for being late.
