何かを見つけるために土を掘る作業やその場所。建設や考古学でよく使われる言葉です。

主に専門的・学術的な場面で使われます。例えば「考古学的発掘」や「工事現場の掘削」など。日常的な小さい掘り作業は「掘る」を使います。
