地球の中心を一周し、北極と南極から等しい距離にある仮想の線で、地球を北半球と南半球に分けます。

「赤道」は主に地理や理科の文脈で使われます。「赤道を越える」「赤道付近の国々」などの表現によく見られます。比喩的には使いません。
