中身がなく、何も存在しない状態や、心にぽっかり穴があいたような寂しさや虚しさの感覚。

感情的な空虚さを表すときによく使われます（例：『a feeling of emptiness』）。物理的な空っぽさには日常的にはあまり使わず、文学的な表現に多いです。
