水中で息ができずに死ぬ、または死にかけること。他人や物を溺れさせる場合や、何かに圧倒される比喩的な意味もある。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

多くの場合、水の事故について使われる言葉です。「○○で溺れる」のように使います。他動詞として誰かを溺死させる意味や、比喩的に「仕事に溺れる」「雑音をかき消す（drown out the noise）」という表現も一般的です。
