주로 공식적이거나 문학적 맥락에서, 심각하게 나쁜 상황이나 결과를 말할 때 쓴다. 'dismal weather'는 아주 우울한 날씨, 'dismal performance'는 형편없는 성적을 뜻한다. 가벼운 실망에는 사용하지 않는다.
