初めて何かを見つけたり、知らなかったことを知ったり、大事な事実に気づいたりすること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「discover a place」や「discover that...」など、物理的な発見や事実への気づきのどちらにも使えます。科学的発見には「発見した」が自然です。
