物やものごとを完全に壊して使えなくすること。また、計画や自信など目に見えないものを完全に台無しにすることも含まれます。

「壊す」よりもさらに強く、物理的・精神的損害の両方に使われます。'destroy confidence' や 'destroy chances' など抽象的なものにもよく使います。会話でも比喩的に使えます。

The fire destroyed the old house.
