何かが他のものから作られたり、元になったものに由来している状態を指します。オリジナルから生まれたという意味合いです。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に学術論文や科学、技術の文脈で使われます。「〜から派生した」「〜に由来する」として 'from' と一緒に用いられることが多いです。日常会話ではあまり使いません。
