国民が選挙などでリーダーを選び、政治に意見を持てる政治体制。また、平等な参加や自由を重んじる考え方も指します。
Usage Notes (Japanese)
一般的には不可算名詞として使われ、「democracy is important」（民主主義は大切）と表現されます。特定の国やシステムを指す場合は「a democracy」（一つの民主主義国家）と言います。'democratic values'や'defend democracy'などの表現もよく使われます。
