物や環境、状態が悪くなったり、品質が低下すること。人や物事の価値や尊厳が失われる場合にも使います。

『劣化』『悪化』はフォーマルな表現で、環境や社会、価値観の悪化などに使われます。日常会話ではあまり使いません。価値の減少（減価）とは異なります。
