被告とは、裁判で罪を問われている人、または民事裁判で訴えられている側のことです。

法律用語で、ニュースや裁判でよく使われます。「plaintiff」は原告、「suspect」は容疑者と区別しましょう。刑事事件では被告人、民事事件では被告（個人または法人）となります。
