日が初めて昇り、空が明るくなり始める瞬間。また、新しいことや考え、気持ちが生まれる始まりも指す。

文学や詩的な表現でよく使われる。『the dawning of a new era』のように「新たな始まり」の比喩としても用いられる。日常会話では稀。
