牛は、乳や肉をとるために飼われている成長した雌の家畜です。普段は一般的に牛全体を指して使われることもあります。

「牛」は本来雌に使われ、「雄」は『雄牛』、「子供」は『子牛』。日常会話では広く「牛」を指すことが多い。「聖なる牛」「乳牛」などの表現がある。「女の人に『牛』というと失礼。」
