何かが予想や普通とは反対であること、または期待・希望とは逆であること。意見や証拠、行動などに使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

フォーマルまたは中立的な文脈でよく使われます。'contrary to popular belief'（一般的な信念に反して）、'on the contrary'（それどころか）、'a contrary opinion'（反対意見）など。'controversial'（議論を呼ぶ）とは意味が異なります。
