請負業者は、特定の仕事やプロジェクトのために雇われる個人や会社です。一般的に一時的な契約でサービスや作業を提供します。

建設やIT分野でよく使われます。個人にも法人にも使えます。社員ではなく、契約ごとに働きます。'independent contractor'は「個人事業主」や「フリーランス」を指すことがあります。サブコントラクター（下請け業者）とは異なります。
