何かのタイトルや賞を目指して本気で争う競争者や有力な候補者のこと。

「contender」はタイトルや賞へ本気で挑む有力な人に使うややフォーマルな言葉。「contestant」や「challenger」とは異なり、優勝候補や最有力者を指すことが多い。スポーツや選挙、コンテストなどで使う。

He is a strong contender for the championship.
